Rex Heinke, one of the most prominent appellate lawyers on the West Coast and co-head of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld’s nationally renowned Supreme Court and Appellate practice for nearly 20 years, has joined the California Appellate Law Group*.

Rex has argued more than 150 appeals in state and federal court, some with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake. He is regularly called on to defend major corporations and high-profile individuals in some of their most hotly contested appellate matters, and has extensive experience before the California Supreme Court, the California Court of Appeal, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as other appellate courts throughout the country. He also has a well-earned reputation in First Amendment law, including entertainment, media, and defamation litigation.

Rex was twice named “California Lawyer of the Year” by California Lawyer Magazine. The Daily Journal has deemed him one of the “Top 100 Lawyers in California” and the National Law Journal has placed him on their national “Appellate Hot List.” Rex has been listed as one of America’s “Leading Lawyers for Business” in Chambers USA for nearly a decade, and he is a past president of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Joining Rex in moving to CALG is Jessica Weisel, his longtime colleague in many high-profile appeals. Jessica has spent more than 20 years handling complex appeals and writs. She has litigated in nearly every federal circuit Court of Appeals, authored briefs cited by the United States Supreme Court, and has extensive experience in the California Supreme Court and California Court of Appeal. Together, Rex and Jessica have represented dozens of Fortune 500 companies, high-net-worth individuals, and high-stakes pro bono clients in appeals, writs, and trial consulting.
